About Gua Sha

Gua Sha is healing technique used throughout Asia. Gua means to rub or friction. Sha is the term used to describe congestion of blood at the surface of the body. When friction is applied in repeated even strokes, the sha surfaces as small red petechiae. In minutes the petechiae fade into echymotic patches.

What does the type of Sha indicate?

The colour of the Sha is both diagnostic and prognostic. The Sha that you see in treatment represents the movement of Qi and Blood. It is the body throwing out the old blood and Pathogenic factors released when the Qi and Blood is moved.

How fast will the petechiae fade?

The Sha petechiae should fade in 2-4 days. If it is slower to fade, indicating poor Blood circulation, the practitioner must ascertain whether it is deficiency of Blood, Qi or Yang, a deeper stagnation or organ deficiency at the root

The benefits of Gua Sha

The benefits of Gua Sha are numerous. It improves the micro-circulation in the area which is being scraped. Gua sha can be used to inform you of the location of the problem. The Sha there is the more indication of a problem in a specific area.

It moves stuck blood, promoting normal circulation to the muscles, tissues, and organs directly beneath the surface treated. The patient experiences immediate changes in stiffness, pain and mobility. Normal metabolic processes are restored by the movement of fluids as nutrients are carried to the tissues and metabolic wastes are carried away. Because Gua Sha mimics sweating, it resolves fever.

Gua Sha cools the patient who is overheated, warms the patient who is chilled, nourishes the patient who is deficient, and clears the patient who is excess. Gua Sha is therefore considered an adaptogenic technique.
A practitioner will consider Gua Sha in any case of pain or discomfort, for upper respiratory or digestive problems, and for any condition where palpation indicates there is sha.

Gua Sha has NO side effects except the bruising. The bruising takes about 3 days to clear or up to 7 days if the circulation is poor.

Patient Testimonials

-

Main complaints: Stiffness and tightness in the back, shoulder and neck area.
Treatment protocols: Massage & Guasha Coventry
Treatment Outcome: General wellbeing, improved energy, shoulder and hip problem resolved.
Patient Testimonial:
"The Gua sha treatment was a pleasant experience; I hardly felt any pressure or sensation on my back, but my back felt loose, relaxed and less tensed.
However, when I shown my back later, I was surprised to see how red it was with all these small areas covered with tiny red spots. The practitioner had explained to me that the colour and degree of spots was indicative of a reaction. The darker the colour of the spots and the more spots there are the better the reaction."
Ehm so I obviously had a reaction and needed it clearing! "
